| The
Sierra Nevada is like a ceremonial house - the Kankurwa (Nujué)
- where the Mamas (Mamos) recognize each space and interpret each
element that makes it up. For that reason, every act, every idea,
every moment implies a great responsibility; to forget all or part
of this principle vacates the essence of being Arhuaco, Kogi or
Wiwa. The Sierra Nevada is the place that concentrates all responsibility
towards the rest of the universe; it is the place where what is
sacred and vital for the planet is guarded and watched over; it
is the base and the union with the spiritual world. It is the umbilical
cord that unites the origen and the present, the spiritual with
the material; it is the union with the Mother. By having inherited
this habitat and the knowledge of its meaning, we are given the
role of the Elder Brothers.
The
Sierra Nevada constitutes a system of 29 principal rivers, which
are born of the numerous glacial lakes found at 3000 meters above
sea level and upwards, and which make their way down the three faces
of vast massif. Many of these rivers empty out into the Caribbean
Sea. The Sierra Nevada is a pyramid, with a surface extending over
21, 158 square kilometers. It is the largest coastal mountain in
the world, reaching from the sea upwards to a height of 5,778 meters
above sea level.
